Abstract

The development of complex systems has come to the point of beginning to analyze living systems. Living systems are examples of structured complex processes whose vitality is a form of existence independent of their material substrate. We are beginning to understand complex living systems well enough to design and engineer them, creating a form of "living technology". This presentation will discuss two examples of living technology: an electronic form consisting of the internet and the world-wide-web, and a molecular-cellular form consisting of artificial cells currently being developed.
